SWMU 7 – Tow Way Road Fuel Farm
The TWFF is an area affected by releases from numerous large, partially in-ground, concrete fuel storage tanks. The fuel storage tanks date from the 1940s. Over the years, spills have occurred and tanks have leaked. During the IR Round 1 (1986), groundwater monitoring wells were installed. Sampling of these wells found benzene above the MCL for drinking water, and a free product layer underground. A full RFI of soil and groundwater was required by the permit and was completed. Provisions were made for investigations of surface water and sediment based on the results of the initial RFI work. A free product recovery system is operating at the site as an Interim Corrective Measure (ICM), designed to stop the free product from spreading. A pilot study to oxidize petroleum constituents in soil (below the water table) and groundwater was initiated at the site. A report covering the product recovery activities was submitted in October 2000. Status
